About this fly
Pheasant: a classic wet fly from Favorite Flies and Their Histories (1892) by Mary Orvis Marbury The Orvis flies were tied with either red or black silk. They used the contemporary dark lacquer on the heads which darkened the red silk to a claret. A dark lacquer can be achieved by dissolving garnet shellac with denatured alcohol. The hook size is similar to the size used for the book though the flies were tied smaller for sale and use.
In the old books
Original dressing as pictured in Marbury, Favorite Flies and Their Histories (1892), Plate T, No. 189. The photo above is a later tie, not the original.
Inside the vault every material on this fly opens to its own card, and you can save the fly to your own boxes.
