Classic Wet Fly

Tied By Christian Andrews

Hook: #8 blind sproat with gut leader

Thread: silk, claret or red with dark lacquered head

Tail: Golden Pheasant crest

Body: yellow floss

Hackle: dun

Wings: hyaline and mottled

Notes:

From the illustration in Favorite Flies and Their Histories (1892) by Mary Orvis Marbury

The faux gut used here is waxed silk thread doubled, folded, twisted with a hackle spinner, and folded again so it twists against itself.

Old lacquer darkened the thread when applied on the head. Claret thread is used here as contemporary head cements dry clear.

Hyaline is not an ingredient by a quality and the term used by Mary in her book. It means clear or translucent. Pheasant wing feather slips were used in this example.
