Hook: desired size to imitate desired beetle – dry fly hook
Thread: black
Materials-
body: crafters’ foam of desired color – as wide as hook gape
body: peacock herl or dubbing of desired color
legs: black deer (buck tail) or “silly legs”
wing: white or fluorescent yarn used as an indicator
Notes:
Cut a piece of foam twice hook shank length and as wide as the hook gape
Cut a point on one end of the strip of foam and tie in by the point above the barb with the strip hang out over the hook bend
Wrap a herl body or dub a body of desired color to the thorax
Tie in a pinch of deer hair or three strands of silly legs for the legs at the middle of the strand; pull back on both ends of the strand and wrap at the shank to hold the legs back
Fold the foam up over the body and tie in behind eye; clip foam over the eye to shape the beetle head
Tie in strand of white or fluorescent yarn to act as an indicator; clip to desired size
Trim legs to desired length
Whip finish; head cement the knot.
