About this fly
Hey Brent, enjoyed watching you tye at Sow Bug, I’ve gone down that rabbit hole!
What the Green Highlander imitates
- Salmon / steelhead classic wet (floss, tinsel, hackle)
Where the Green Highlander came from
- Described by Francis Francis, River Carron / Ross-shire. Describes it as 'the Highlander' (no 'Green'), saying it is the best fly for the Carron and Ross-shire rivers; dressing from Snowie of Inverness.Source: Francis Francis, A Book on Angling (1867; later ed., archive.org bookonanglingbei00franiala), p.268
- Originated by Grant, Scottish Highlands. Kelson's heading attributes the Green Highlander to Grant; no further detail on who Grant was. / Notes first mention in Francis as 'Highlander'; Kelson later credits a Mr. Grant; colours yellow and green kept through to modern versions.Source: Green Highlander "Fly of the Week #62" - FAOL | Kelson, The Salmon Fly (1895), pp.160-161
