Ostrich marabou, a recent addition to flyshops, is commonly used for soft hackles on salmon flies due to its smaller size compared to traditional ostrich plumes. When selecting, prioritize feathers with long, thin stems and dense, even barbules in the desired length. While they offer quality and consistent dye jobs, keep in mind that they can be relatively expensive compared to turkey marabou. Typically sold individually or in bags of a dozen or 20 feathers.
