Baitfish Emulator Flash (BEF) consists of thin Mylar strands with varying textures, featuring a specially treated or stitched ribbon edge for easy winding. The material comes with 2.5″ to 3″ long fibers (with a 5.5″ variant available for larger patterns), and each package contains 1 yard of material. Approximately 80% of the fibers are dyed in rich, intense colors, while the remaining 20% maintain a pearlescent finish. The material excels in creating Clouser patterns, baitfish imitations, minnow patterns, and can serve as collar material for spey flies. It’s particularly effective for larger streamer and intruder style patterns. The versatility allows for use as either the entire pattern body or as an accent material. The unique construction allows for quick pattern development, requiring only 2-3 turns to create an effective baitfish profile. The fused edge facilitates easy winding while maintaining fiber alignment. The material offers enhanced durability compared to traditional materials like bucktail, while providing excellent flash and movement characteristics. For optimal application, tie in approximately 1/4″ behind the hook eye and make 3-4 winds, either consecutively or overlapping. Multiple colors can be layered by adding additional material over the top. The pattern is typically completed with holographic eyes and secured with epoxy or UV resin for durability and enhanced appearance. Standard pattern construction involves simple winding of the material 2-3 turns around the hook, securing the material, adding holographic eyes, and finishing with epoxy or UV resin. This straightforward process creates effective, durable patterns with minimal tying time while maintaining excellent fish-attracting properties.
