The Australian wood duck, also known as the maned duck or maned goose (Chenonetta jubata), is a dabbling duck found across Australia. It is the sole living species in the Chenonetta genus. While traditionally classified in the Anatinae subfamily (dabbling ducks), there’s a possibility it belongs to the Tadorninae subfamily (shelducks), with the ringed teal potentially being its closest living relative.
Measuring 45–51 cm, this duck resembles a small goose and primarily grazes in flocks for feeding. The male features a grey body with a dark brown head and mottled breast. In contrast, the female exhibits white stripes above and below the eye, along with mottled underparts. Both genders sport grey wings with black primaries and a distinctive white speculum. Juveniles resemble adult females but are lighter with a more streaky breast.
