George Selwyn Marryat, Frederic Maurice Halford (The Father of Modern Dry Fly Fishing) in the 1800s, and Edward Ringwood Hewitt early 1900s worked on ant patterns. Ants are an important food fare for trout, especially as the season starts to close down and the mayfly and caddis fly hatches slow down. This pattern is another example for the early stages of ant patterns that have evolved from natural materials to using materials like foam or foam cylinders. As with the grasshopper; ants should be included into your fly box.
