Black Ant

Black Ant

Terrestrial

Tied By Christian Andrews

Hook: #18 straight shank dry

Thread: black

Body Parts: tag, tail, body, front hackle, wings, head

Materials: gold, ostrich herl (in a tuft before the tag), black thread, black, sized to hook, black hackle tips, claret thread

Notes:

This is a fly tied off the illustration in Favorite Flies and Their Histories (1892) by Mary Orvis Marbury. Ingredients are best guesses and approximations in an attempt to imitate the illustration. Someone has suggested using claret thread for the main thread and overlaying the body or using a marker to darken the body thread in an attempt to make the head smaller (by not needing to whip off the black thread and over tie the claret for the head).
