Midge Cactus Chenille

« Back to Glossary Index

Hareline Dubbin Cactus Chenille is a shiny, spiky material that can be wrapped around the hook shank to create bright, textured bodies or heads on flies. Made from a loose weave of Mylar fibers with pearlescent qualities, it is available in a wide range of colors and is known for its ability to add sparkle and action to a fly pattern. The chenille’s small diameter and durability make it suitable for tying a variety of fly patterns, from streamers to nymphs, and it is especially effective when a flashy, attention-grabbing look is needed.

Commonly used for streamers, Woolly Buggers, Euro Jig streamers, and Cinder worms, this material excels in creating visible, durable bodies that hold up in both freshwater and saltwater conditions. Its holographic fibers, blending silver and gold, add depth and shimmer to the fly’s profile, making it a popular choice for steelhead, salmon, bass, pike, and large trout flies. Compared to Polar Chenille, Cactus Chenille has shorter fibers, reducing the undulation effect underwater but adding durability to the fly’s design. It also has a subtle, pearl-like reflection that makes it easy to wrap tightly around the hook or build up to form fuller bodies.

For those seeking a less intense flash, Ice Chenille provides a similar appearance with a more understated effect, offering a good balance of durability and subtlety, depending on the fishing environment and fish behavior.
