Nymph, Stone Fly
Tied By James R Bass
Hook: Daiichi 1270 size 8-14
Thread: Veevus 10/0 any color
Materials-
body: The body of the fly is just the thread covering the hook shank with 3 to 5 wraps of ultra small wire, color is your choice
abdomen: Little bit of dubbing goes a long way, tight wraps with no need to brush. As the fly takes strikes or you get a hook up the fish will start to actually pull out the dubbing.
bead: Any color or sizr
tail: 3-5 single strands of pheasant tail, fish can’t count
wing case: Wing case can be turkey, pheasant, something shiny, latex etc
Notes:
The daiichi 1270 hook is by far one of my most favorite hooks to use, I have a bunch of personal patterns I use on this hook just a lone.
The main reason I like this hook is because of the long slender look and a long slow bend.
start: pick your hook size and bead piece them together clamp the hook in the vise. Start your wrap from the bead going back about 1-3 eye widths from the point of the hook or ouch spot. Now grab 3-5 pieces of pheasant use your best judgement here for lengths just because they tell you one thing in a book, video or hearsay doesn’t generally mean it actually works for every river. I live in Michigan I fish probably 20+ different rivers easily a year experiment with what works for your home river or te rivers you fish. So while tying in the tail section now would be a good time to do your wire ribbing 3-5 turn visble, then I usually do a few extra wraps where the wing case is going to be. Now at this point I’m ready to tie on my wing case. The pheasant tail or whatever type of feather you’re using at this point the tips should be facing the point of the hook or ouch spot use a couple securing wraps and move on to the dubbing, experiment with whatever colors you like as long as you can make sure it when wrapping it stays as tight as you can. (Haha snapped the thread off didn’t ya) now after this take wing casing feathers and pull them up by the tips and secure right behind the bead, cut off the excess, and either hand whip finish (be a man) or use a whip finisher like the rest of us, light uv resin or glue, cure/dry go have a 60+ fish day
