Aussie Possum Dubbing

« Back to Glossary Index

Spirit River’s Aussie Possum Dubbing is a natural fly tying material made from Australian possum fur. It features a blend of soft underfur and spiky guard hairs, creating a naturally buggy look that’s perfect for nymph patterns. This dubbing is easy to apply and works well for a variety of flies, including scuds, sowbugs, caddis, and stoneflies.

Available in multiple colors, Aussie Possum Dubbing excels underwater, making it ideal for nymphs and emergers, but not suitable for dry flies due to its water-absorbing properties. It’s a great choice for mayfly nymphs, caddis larvae, stoneflies, damselfly nymphs, scuds, and even smaller streamers like juvenile sculpins.

While Australian Possum Dubbing is unique, it can be compared to Hare’s Mask Dubbing, which has similar soft underfur and spiky guard hairs but is slightly less coarse. Aussie Possum tends to offer a more pronounced buggy appearance.

A popular fly that uses this dubbing is the Birds Nest Nymph.
