The large feathers extending from the humerus across the shoulder and under the cape are known as spade hackles.
On a rooster, spade hackles resemble wide ‘hen back’ feathers, but with very long, webby fibers. These feathers, located on the sides of a hackle cape, have a distinctive shape that isn’t ideal for wrapping collars. However, their stiff fibers make them perfect for crafting tails. To use them, simply pluck a spade hackle from the side of the dry fly cape.
