Ostrich Spey feathers offer versatility for various fly patterns, such as large “leggy” patterns, Intruders, and sizable saltwater shrimp patterns—making them a cost-effective alternative to Rhea.
The Ostrich Mini Spey Plume Hackle presents miniature versions of the giant tail plumes used in hat decoration, Intruders, and Alec Jackson Ostrich Chenille fly bodies. These feathers, averaging 3 1/2″ – 4″ in length, feature fluffy, water-absorbent barbules measuring slightly over an inch. The barbules have strong tapered shafts, mirroring the overall strength and pliability of the feather stems. This allows for versatile applications, including winding as collar hackle or palmered as spey-type hackle.
Tiers can wind the feathers from the tip or butt, either whole or with one side stripped off, providing a wide range of effects from densely packed to thin and wispy. Barbules can be trimmed and applied like hair wings on standard-size summer flies, offering a unique blend resembling a cross between calf tail and marabou.
