Crane Fly

Crane Fly

Dry Fly

Tied By Christian Andrews

Hook: #14

Thread: red

Materials-

body: Yellow (floss)

front hackle: dark dun rooster cape 2x gape

Notes:

from Favorite Flies and Their Histories by Mary Orvis Marbury, as illustrated by her father Charles Orvis

The hackle flies in Mary’s book are named for the color or material used for the hackle, so did the crane fly use crane feathers? Likely. We can’t do that anymore!

Lay down a base of red thread (because the head is red)
Tie in a length of yellow floss to the bend of the hook; touching wraps forward to a hook eye length behind eye; catch in, tie off, clip extra
Wrap a dark dun front hackle in soft hackle fashion (shiny side of the feather out and fibers leaning back to the hook bend); tie in, tie off, clip extra
Wrap a small read head with the red thread; whip finish; head cement.
