Midge Pupa
Midge
Tied By Christian Andrews
Hook: #18 – 24 wet (nymph, scud, emerger)
Thread: tan (or to match hatch)
Materials-
body: brown hackle center stem
wing case: pheasant, turkey, goose
thorax: brown dubbing
legs: partrige hackle fibers
Notes:
This is another Fling and Puterbaugh fly with the focus on imitating nature and not tying a particular pattern. They suggest white floss and fine gold wire for the body. Here the center stem of hackle feather is used instead. The idea is to create a slender, segmented body.
Choose a hook that best imitates a midge pupa – #18 – 24
Lay a base of thread to match hatch color
Tie in body material (if floss and wire rib, tie the wire in first); touching wraps forward to the midpoint of the hook shank; tie off
Tie in wing casing
Dub a thorax in matching color
Pull wing case material forward over thorax and tie off
Tie in a few hackle fibers on the underside of the hook behind the eye about to the hook gap.
Whip finish and head cement head and wing case (or resin)
