Thread: black 8/0, or finer

head: bead (tungsten)
body: black thread
ribbing: contrasting wire
Notes:
Use a 20, 18, 16 curved (scud, emerger) hook
Thread a bead onto the hook small eye first. Match the bead to the hook size.
Lay a thread base and tie in the wire ribbing. Traditionally this midge is tied in black and silver, but it can be tied in a variety of colors with contrasting or matching wire ribbing.
Create a tapered body to about the size of the bead right behind the bead.
Wrap the wire in ribbing loops.
Tie off and snip or helicopter off the extra wire.
Dab of head cement.
